Missouri May Create Health Insurance Exchange

Missouri has become one of the states that is considering creating a health insurance exchange. Through this the residents and small businesses would be provided with a state run marketplace in which to purchase insurance as well as compare prices and coverage. The legislation that would enact this exchange was looked at in a House committee early Tuesday.

What this exchange would do for providers is allow private companies to compete for possible policy holders. They would do this in a similar way that travelers look at hotel prices and airfare on budget travel websites like hotwire. The ability for customers to compare rates easily would hopefully lead to more reasonable rates.

Another supposed benefit to the exchange would be the ease of access to health care for individuals and families who are not provided health care plans by their jobs. It is also hoped that the exchange will lower costs for health care through small businesses and self-employed individuals.
